Janusphere Dance Company proudly announces the world premiere of Darion Smith’s, Lucky Number Five, at the HCC Dance Showcase on November 7th and 8th. Performances will take place in the Studio Theatre, located within the Horowitz Center at Howard Community College.
Smith’s new work for five dancers is deeply rooted in his curiosity about pivotal life moments, when individuals' perceptions shift, they withstand intense pressure, or they transcend expectations. His piece is a captivating journey into the social mechanisms of modern life. It navigates themes of grief, anxiety, self-realization, and resilience, using the powerful image of a labyrinth to symbolize the complexities and pressures of contemporary society.
Developed during a creative residency at HCC, the work's organic structure was distilled by Smith and his dancers focusing on movement experimentation, intentionality, and physical and social connection. The performance features an original sound composition by Jonathan Pratt, a longtime collaborator on both Janusphere projects and Smith’s work.
Lucky Number Five creates an expression of resilience and hope. It connects with the human spirit and underscores the universal necessity for social connections and exchanges.
